  10.        Cosmo Create encompasses the functionality of the previously
  11.        released WebMagic application. This chapter lists the major
  12.        changes and additions available in Cosmo Create that were
  13.        not in the last release of WebMagic.

  16.        3.1  _M_a_j_o_r__N_e_w__F_e_a_t_u_r_e_s
  17.  
  18.           +o Port to 6.2 - You must have installed at least Irix 6.2
  19.             to install Cosmo Create.
  20.  
  21.           +o Cosmo Create no longer requires a license to run.
  22.  
  23.           +o Tables - Tables are now shown WYSIWYG.  Tables will be
  24.             displayed very similarly to how they look in Netscape
  25.             Navigator, you can create tables, edit their contents,
  26.             change their attributes, etc. See Chapter 5 for
  27.             limitations.

  29.           +o Cosmo Create supports the creation and editing of
  30.             frames.
  31.  
  32.           +o Cosmo Create now allows the viewing and editing of the
  33.             raw HTML source.  Edits can be fed back into the main
  34.             document and previewed directly in a web browser.

  36.           +o Helper Applications - You can launch Photoshop, Cosmo
  37.             Worlds, Image Works, xv or enhance on the appropriate
  38.             element (an image or a VRML plug-in, for example) from
  39.             the Editors palette if you have these applications
  40.             installed on your system.  If the currently selected
  41.             inline is editable by the helper app, it will ungrey
  42.             and be active.  When the out of place edits of the
  43.             inline data are finished, the inline area in page will
  44.             update to reflect the changes.  For applications with
  45.             the appropriate conversion rules, you can launch the
  46.             out of place editor on the original content, and when
  47.             the edit completes, the data will be auto converted
  48.             back into the web-compatible format inlined into the
  49.             page. The conversion rules are specified in the
  50.             Converting panel of the Preferences panel.  Also, if
  51.             the appropriate prototype file is installed on the
  52.             system for a particular editor and converter, you can
  53.             launch it on an empty inline area to create content for
  54.             the inline area.

  56.           +o Showcase - Showcase is now available as a helper
  57.             application. A Showcase file can be drag-and-dropped
  58.             onto a page, and it will be converted into a gif and
  59.

  75.             highlighted on the page, then Showcase will be

  77.             application. Launching Showcase on the inlined file
  78.             will allow you to edit the original Showcase document.
  79.             When the Showcase document is saved, the inline gif
  80.             will be updated to represent the new state of the
  81.             Showcase file.

  84.             either Ghostscript and eoe.sw.imagetools, or
  85.             Impressario _p_s_r_i_p be installed on the machine.
  86.             Impressario is preferred because it produces higher
  87.             quality output.

  89.           +o Button creation tool - Button Magic lets you create
  90.             nicely rendered, antialiased images of buttons with 2D
  91.             or 3D text labels for use as buttons, bullets, or
  92.             titles.  An alpha channel is used so that the buttons
  93.             blend correctly with the background. You can choose
  94.             among various shapes and fonts, and you can alter the
  95.             appearance of any button in endless combinations by
  96.             choosing lighting effects, colors, and textures.

  98.           +o Run Once - Cosmo Create uses so called "run-once with
  99.             multiple documents" behavior. If Cosmo Create is
  100.             already running on the system, attempts to run
  101.             additional copies of the program will simply open a new
  102.             editing window in the original program.  If you
  103.             explicitly need to have multiple copies of Cosmo Create
  104.             running, you can specify "-runmany" as a command-line
  105.             argument.  See the cosmocreate(1) man page for details.
  106.  
  107.           +o 24-bit Imaging - Cosmo Create now defaults to using a
  108.             24-bit visual for high quality color and image display.
  109.             If a 24-bit visual is not available on the system, the
  110.             default system visual is used.

  112.           +o A Perl CGI script can be generated from the FORM
  113.             dialog. This script contains the basic boilerplate for
  114.             a CGI script and lists the form variables and values.
  115.  
  116.           +o Sweeping out and interactively resizing inlines - You
  117.             can drag out image, applet, plug-in, and whitespace
  118.             regions.  After dragging out, the inline will be
  119.             selected and the editor dialog will pop up.  At any
  120.             point, you can interactively resize any of these inline
  121.             objects.  Holding down the Shift key will constrain
  122.             their aspect ratios.

  140.           +o Improved inline attributes editor - The user can enter
  141.             an original, rich representation for an inline (such as
  142.             an rgb file), and have a web-compatible stand-in (such
  143.             as a gif) generated automatically for it.  The stand-in
  144.             type can be selected from the popup menu displaying all
  145.             the known conversions.  To disable the writing out of
  146.             width and height tags, there is a new unit type called
  147.             Unset that effectively unconstrains that dimension and
  148.             suppresses the tag on output.  This unset unit type can
  149.             also be used to reset the image to its default size, or
  150.             the Default button can be used.

  152.           +o Live plug-ins - Plug-ins display live just as they
  153.             would in Netscape, including full page plug-ins (for
  154.             Netscape 2.x).  However, full plug-in functionality is
  155.             not yet available, and so certain plug-ins may behave
  156.             poorly in Cosmo Create if the plug-ins are not written
  157.             carefully.  Live Applets are not viewable.  See Chapter
  158.             5 for more information.

  160.           +o Spell checking - Cosmo Create now offers you the
  161.             ability to spell check your documents, in a number of
  162.             languages.

  164.           +o Floating Tools - Tools can now be left floating on the
  165.             desktop after use and will continue to track the
  166.             insertion point and current selection.

  168.           +o File type rules - The FTR database is now used rather
  169.             than globbing to determine the type of files
  170.             imported/drag-n-dropped into Cosmo Create.  Also, a new
  171.             panel on the attributes dialog allows you to specify
  172.             what to do with each filetype, i.e. whether it should
  173.             be linked or inlined as an image, applet, or plug-in.

  175.           +o Link generation commands - The URL for a link can now
  176.             be generated by an external UNIX command.

  217.           +o Alternate HTML - Certain tags such as the APPLET tag
  218.             allow the author to specify alternate HTML, which is
  219.             now viewable through a mode switch in the View menu.

  221.           +o Scrolling Backgrounds - Background images now scroll
  222.             when you scroll the page.  Also, the background image
  223.             field has been split into two fields:  one for the
  224.             local file and one for the published URL.

  226.           +o JPEG and PNG - Cosmo Create now supports WYSIWYG
  227.             inlining of progressive JPEG and PNG images.

  230.        3.3  _H_o_t__C_o_n_t_e_n_t_:__F_e_t_c_h__P_a_g_e_s__f_r_o_m__t_h_e__W_e_b

  232.           +o This feature enables you to enter a URL into Cosmo
  233.             Create and fetch the page from the web, provided the
  234.             preferences are filled out appropriately (see "Setting
  235.             up Hot Content", below).  There are three ways to get a
  236.             URL into Cosmo Create:
  237.  
  238.               1.  Type a URL into the File->Open dialog (See
  239.                   "Browse Feature" below)
  240.  
  241.               2.  Drag a WebJumper into the File->Open dialog
  242.  
  243.               3.  Enter a URL as a command line argument
  244.  
  245.             Any of the above actions will cause Cosmo Create to
  246.             attempt to fetch the page from the web.  Press "Cancel"
  247.             in the "Progress:" dialog to stop the download.

  249.           +o Setting up Hot Content - Cosmo Create will attempt to
  250.             acquire the network preferences from Netscape.  If your
  251.             netscape is correctly set up to get outside the
  252.             firewall, Cosmo Create should be able to do the same.
  253.             In the event that Netscape is not properly configured,
  254.             you must go to File->Preferences Proxy tab panel and
  255.             fill in the SOCKS and PROXY information accordingly.

  274.           +o Browse Feature - The File->Open dialog, as well as the
  275.             dialogs popped up from any of the "Browse" buttons, is
  276.             a mini web browser.  Entering a URL into this dialog
  277.             will cause the "Filter" button to change to say
  278.             "Follow".  Pressing the "Follow" button will cause
  279.             Cosmo Create to commence fetching the URL currently in
  280.             the text field and will display the links, and inline
  281.             objects in the file list.  To traverse another link,
  282.             select one from the list, and again, press "Follow".
  283.             Pressing OK will cause the value from the text field to
  284.             be returned to the dialog from which the browser was
  285.             popped up.  Pressing Apply in that dialog will cause
  286.             the inline image, background image, or other web
  287.             reference to be fetched into the document.
  288.  
  289.           +o Saving inline images along with the HTML - Cosmo Create
  290.             allows the saving of inline images in the same
  291.             directory as the HTML for web fetched pages. To use
  292.             this feature, open the URL via any of the above
  293.             methods, modify the resultant page in some way.  When
  294.             the warning dialog pops up, make sure the checkbox for
  295.             saving inline content along with the page is checked,
  296.             then click Save to save the page.  The images will get
  297.             written into the same directory as the HTML.

  302.           +o A "WYSIWYG Tables" item has been added to the View
  303.             menu. When this is turned off, tables are displayed
  304.             using graphical icons to represent the individual HTML
  305.             table tags, and the table itself is not drawn.  This
  306.             isn't as pretty, but it is sometimes desirable for
  307.             speed.

  309.           +o Cosmo Create 1.0.2 now provides Chinese language
  310.             support.

  312.           +o Pressing Save in the Preferences dialog now applies the
  313.             preferences to the current editing session in addition

  345.             editing frames to delete the selected frame(s).

  347.           +o Cosmo Create now uses an explicit keyboard focus policy
  348.             instead of a pointer focus policy. This means that you
  349.             must explicitly click in a text field or editing area
  350.             to set the keyboard focus for data entry.  This change
  351.             brings Cosmo Create into compliance with the SGI IRIX
  352.             Interactive Style Guide and will make editing within
  353.             text fields more convenient.

  355.           +o Selection of form components is now much easier. A text
  356.             field or text area can be selected by simply clicking
  357.             on the component. Similarly, a toggle, option or push
  358.             button is selected by pressing on it and a list
  359.             component is selected by pressing on one of the list
  360.             entries.

  362.           +o The Cosmo Create editing window's position on the
  363.             screen and its size are now preserved between runs of
  364.             the program.
  365.  
  366.           +o The View Menu settings are now automatically preserved
  367.             between runs of the program. Previously, these settings
  368.             were only saved when the program preferences were
  369.             saved.
  370.  
  371.           +o Empty lines that are ignored by browsers are now
  372.             indicated by both changing the end-of-paragraph symbol
  373.             (the paragraph symbol enclosed in square brackets), and
  374.             by displaying a message in the editing window status
  375.             bar.

  377.           +o A set of HTML tag reference pages has been added to the
  378.             help documentation.  These pages provide detailed
  379.             information about which browsers support which HTML
  380.             elements, attributes and values.

  382.           +o Detailed HTML tag reference information can be obtained
  383.             for any tag in the Source editing window by positioning
  384.             the cursor over the tag and either selecting the Lookup
  385.             HTML Tag item on the Edit or right-mouse popup menues
